Pool care for extreme weather and cyclones

If bad weather is looming, a storm on the radar or even a cyclone, what can you do to prepare the pool and surrounds for a weather event?

Remove any loose items: With bad weather coming it's time to remove any toys, inflatable beds, floaties, or other items from the pool and surrounds to prevent them from blowing away or becoming projectiles in strong winds.

Disconnect and store equipment: If you have invested in an expensive pool robot or other cleaner, it is a good idea to remove them from the pool and store them. Pool robots normally have an AC controller and a low voltage supply to the robot itself. However remote the chances, this makes for potential circuitry damage in the event of a lightning strike.

Protect electrical equipment: While most of the electrical equipment, such chlorinators, switches and other electrical gear is weatherproof, extreme weather might drive water in through cracks or around unsealed switches, etc. If you are concerned about heavy rain finding its way in, you might like to securely wrap your electrical devices and their circuitry with a tarp or other weatherproofing.

Clear the deck: Clear the deck surrounding the pool and remove sun umbrellas, any furniture or potted plants that could be knocked over by strong winds.

Cover the pool: It's probably not something you can do immediately, but maybe it is time to think about a pool cover. In the event of bad weather, your pool will be protected somewhat from leaves and debris. Pool covers are a great investment as they have many benefits throughout the year saving energy, your equipment and money.

Balance the water chemistry: After the event, make sure that the pH and chlorine levels in the water are within the recommended range to protect the pools.

Remember, it's always important to follow local weather alerts and take appropriate safety precautions during bad weather events.
