As we come ever closer to the final days of the year and the mercury continues to climb at an alarming rate, more and more people are turning to their pools as a way to both beat the heat and relax. With that in mind, though, there's definitely no underestimating how important some fun pool games can be to help keep everyone entertained and stave off the boredom-induced insanity. We've suggested some pool games in the past, but if you're still not satisfied, we might have a few more ideas for you.
Cricket, Slightly Moist
As the summer heats up, Australian teams around the country are starting to hit the pitches again so that we can all lounge around watching the professionals play absolutely riveting games of cricket on the TV. Of course, there are a good number of local pitches and streets that have been filled with the joyous sounds of friendly, casual games of cricket, but if you've ever wanted to try something a little more creative, you might want to consider getting the ball just a little... wet.
Simply position the 'catchers' at the deep end of the pool, and either pitch the ball overarm or hit it with gently with a bat to try and get the ball to land in the water, encouraging some spectacular dive catches. If you want to get some great videos of the day, consider setting up your phone on a tri-pod nearby, and make sure the recording is set to slow-mo.
Everyone Loves A Good Photo
You don't always have to spend lots of time preparing a complicated game to keep the kids happy - sometimes, it's as simple as reaching for your phone and getting ready to take some good photos. Encourage your subjects, be they young children or simply young at heart, to prepare themselves at the edge of the pool, ready your camera, and try to take some pictures of everyone synchronised. They might be jumping into the pool, or they might just be striking a pose. Either way, so long as everyone is moving as one, you can be sure that the pictures you get will look pretty spectacular.
Of course, instead, you could take a trip to the salon hidden in every pool. Wet hair always seems to take on magical properties that defy the laws of physics, so you'll be able to burn quite a bit of time having the subjects of your photography dip their hair into the water, pull off a style, and then pose for your judgement.
And Then There Was One - Marco Polo
We've saved the absolute best for last. If you've never played Marco Polo before, it is in your absolute best interests to do so at your nearest convenience - the game is a classic, and for good reason.
The base premise is simple. Everyone gets in the pool, and one player is selected to be 'Marco'. They must shut their eyes, and their objective is to try and touch the other players, who will try and avoid them. When Marco calls out 'Marco', the other players must respond with 'Polo', helping the chaser navigate without their vision. If you're tagged by Marco, you trade places with them, and it is then your turn to chase the other players.
You are allowed to exit the pool to avoid Marco, but if Marco notices you doing so, they may be able to gain the upper hand. If Marco calls out 'Fish out of water!' while your entire body is out of the water, then you will replace them as Marco. If you instead keep so much as a leg or arm in the water, you're still not entirely safe, as Marco can instead call out 'Mermaid!' to the same effect.
Have we spoken about some of your favourite games to play in the pool? We've only covered a small portion of every game you could possibly play, so there's still a wealth of options that you might want to consider - if we've missed your favourite, let us know on Facebook. Otherwise, if you need anything to keep your pool running over the holidays, you can give us a call on (07) 5537 3341 or visit our Active Pool Supplies stores in Bundall or Runaway Bay.
