High Chlorine Will Damage Your Pool Equipment - Test Your Water Before It's Too Late

02 July 2020

 by Angus Donald

During the colder winter months it is very likely that the chlorine level in your pool will increase to damaging levels.  The combination of colder water, less sunlight, little or no pool use, and a failure to test and adjust levels will inevitably lead to high chlorine at this time of year.  The result of excessively high chlorine is the corrosion of the filtration and cleaning equipment in your pool.  Chlorine at high levels is corrosive so it's not a matter of if, but when.

In particular, the chlorine dissolves the rubber and corrodes the plastic parts of pool cleaners, pumps and filters.  It can also damage pool heater internals, as well as valves and rubber seals.  This damage can be expensive.

Here's a very recent example:  Our Pool Tech Steve visited a pool yesterday and found that high chlorine had wrecked the rubber skirt on this poor old Zodiac pool cleaner.   Fortunately, we got there in time and have been able to replace the skirt.

Steve has tested the chlorine level and added the appropriate amount of "Chlorine Out", a pool chemical we use to safely reduce the chlorine level.  He has reduced the chlorine output on the chlorinator and also been able to reduce the run time of the pump (which will save on power costs).

We sincerely recommend you bring a water sample to us and we'll test the water and provide you our expert advice to save your pool equipment and ultimately save you money.
