 Frequently Asked Questions

Why Is My Pool Cloudy?

Generally, your pool water should be clear, allowing you to identify even small objects on your pool floor. If particulates have built-up within your water, then your water is likely to instead become cloudy. In normal circumstances, your filter will capture these particles, and return particle-free, clear water back to the pool. However, this can be adversely affected due to a dirty/full or failing filter, or, insufficient turnover of water (how often the water in the pool passes through the filter). Dirt and dust can easily find their way from the surrounding area into your pool, making them a common origin for these particulates, as are the microscopic algae that grow in inadequately sanitised water. The clarity of your water may also be affected by unbalanced pool water, which will reduce the effectiveness of the sanitiser, or alter the chemicals present within the water from a liquid state to a solid state. Call Active Pool Supplies on (07) 5537 3341 for all pool cleaning in Oyster Cove.

How Do You Prevent Algae Growing In Your Pool?

Keeping your pool water healthy and balanced requires the appropriate use of sanitiser. Chlorine is the most common tool for keeping your pool well maintained, as it can help you kill any small organisms, bacteria, or algae present within your pool water. There are several different ways of adding chlorine to the pool. In the past, pool owners would manually dose chlorine in liquid form on a very regular basis. Fortunately, you can save time maintain your Oyster Cove pool with a filtration system that utilises a saltwater chlorinator. These systems create a soluble hypochlorous gas using electrolysis and salts, thus killing algae and bacteria and sanitising the pool water. You'll need to keep your pool water well balanced to ensure the chlorine is able to work effectively. Additionally, the water must be filtered adequately so that dead algae and bacteria is captured in the filter and periodically removed from the water when the filter is cleaned. Cleaning the floors and walls of the pool to remove dirt, dust, and debris is also critical to preventing algae, as is good water flow.

Will Changing The Chemical Balance Of My Pool Too Quickly Create Problems?

To keep your pool water healthy, you'll need to perform regular upkeep and maintenance on your pool. Keeping the chemical balance of your pool well-maintained is a delicate process, and you should make sure you don't try to rush through it. Thankfully, Active Pool Supplies can help you understand the best practices for maintaining the chemical balance of your pools. For all pool care in Oyster Cove, get in touch with our team on (07) 5537 3341.

Avoid greatly altering the chemical balance of your pool in a single pass wherever possible. You can instead use small amounts of chemicals to make small changes to your pools chemical balance. After these changes have been made, test the water once you've left it to rest for a few hours with the filter running. You can repeat this process until you're satisfied with the results, which may not be the case for large changes. Correcting the influence of large amounts of chemical can be difficult, and so by making large changes all at once, you may find yourself in a tough spot. If you're trying to maintain the chemical balance of your pool, you should avoid making large changes all at once.

Do Saltwater Pools Require Less Maintenance?

Maintenance isn't a huge task with saltwater pools. If you own a saltwater pool, it'll use a saltwater chlorinator to operate the pump and sanitise the pool. A defined amount of salt (sodium chloride) is dissolved in the pool water and as this pool water passes through the chlorinator's salt cell, a hypochlorous gas is produced (via electrolysis) and this chlorinated water is returned to the pool. It is this chlorine that sanitises the pool, eliminating bacteria and inhibiting algae growth. You'll find the pool pump plugged directly into the chlorinator, because while the chlorinator controls how much chlorine is being produced, plugging the pump directly into the chlorinator allows it to control the operation of the pump as well. You'll still need to make manual adjustments to the chlorinator and the pump based on manual tests of the chlorine level in your pool, as the chlorinator cannot automatically maintain this at the correct levels. As per the brand and model of your chlorinator, you will also need to test the salt content of the pool water and add the requisite amount of salt back into the water. It is important to note that the chlorinator does not consume salt, and the only way that salt can leave the pool is when water leaves the pool (eg splashing or backwashing the filter). There are other adjustments you'll need to make as well, as you will still need to test for other aspects of water balance. Having said that, we do have very smart saltwater chlorinators that are fully automated with in-built acid dosing and pH and chlorine probes to automatically test and control pH and chlorine levels.

Considering the hazardous nature of liquid chlorine, a saltwater pool is simpler and safer to maintain than a liquid chlorine pool. For a saltwater pool, the risk of metal plating along the walls of the pool is severely reduced, making it easier to maintain than an ionised pool.
