 Frequently Asked Questions

Why Is My Pool Cloudy?

At most times, you should be able to see small objects at the bottom of your pool with relative ease due to the high clarity of water. Your pool water can become cloudy, however, if particulates are able to build-up in your pool. Generally, these particulates are captured by your filter, and clean, clear water will be circulated back into your pool. However, this can be adversely affected due to a dirty/full or failing filter, or, insufficient turnover of water (how often the water in the pool passes through the filter). These particulates find their way into your pool from a variety of sources, including microscopic algae growing in any incorrectly sanitised water, or dirt and dust entering the pool from the surrounding environment. It is possible for the clarity of your water to be affected by chemical imbalance, which can cause chemicals within the water to become solid and make it harder to sanitise the water correctly. If you need help with pool cleaning in Mermaid Waters, you can call Active Pool Supplies on (07) 5537 3341.

Can I Prevent Algae From Growing In My Pool?

By using the right amount of sanitiser in your pool, you can keep the water balanced and healthy. You'll commonly want to use chlorine to achieve this, thanks to its ability to kill undesirable elements within your water, including algae, bacteria, and small organisms. Adding chlorine to your pool can be done in a variety of manners. In the past, pool owners would manually dose chlorine in liquid form on a very regular basis. Today, anyone with a Mermaid Waters pool is able to cut out the maintenance time with a filtration system fitted with a saltwater chlorinator. The chlorinator cell uses electrolysis to add salt to the pool water, creating a soluble hypochlorous gas that sanitises the pool water by removing algae and bacteria. For the chlorine to work effectively, the pool water must be balanced so that it remains at the optimal pH level. ou'll also need to ensure the water is being well filtered, ensuring that the dead algae and bacteria that become captured in the filter are routinely removed from the pool. Your pool will also benefit from good water flow and routine brushing of the walls and floor of the pool to remove debris, dirt, and dust.

Should I Change The Chemical Balance Of My Pool By Large Amounts In One Go?

It can be challenging to owner a pool, as they require large amounts of upkeep and maintenance to ensure they remain suitable for homeowners. Though you may want to try to speed through your maintenance commitments for your pool wherever you can, you might not be able to rush the process of balancing your pool's chemicals. Fortunately, to learn the best methods of keeping the balance in your pool's chemical levels, you won't need to look any further than Active Pool Supplies. For all pool care in Mermaid Waters, get in touch with our team on (07) 5537 3341.

It's best if you avoid changing the chemical balance of your pool by large amount in single passes. Make smaller changes instead by using smaller amounts of chemicals in any one attempt. Once you have, you should leave them to rest with a running filter for a few hours, and then test the water. Unlike making large changes, you'll be able to repeat this process continuously until you're entirely satisfied with the resultant chemical balance. It's possible that by adding large amounts of chemical in a single pass, you'll find yourself having made a large change that will be hard to correct. Don't make large changes to the chemical balance of your pool in a single pass if you're trying to keep it well-maintained.

Is It Easier To Maintain Saltwater Pools?

The maintenance requirements of a saltwater pool are generally minimal. Any saltwater pool is dependant on a saltwater chlorinator. Chlorinated water is produced by dissolving salt (ie sodium chloride) into the pool water and then passing the pool water through the chlorinator's salt cell to create a hypochlorous gas via electrolysis, finally returning the chlorinated water back to the pool's main body of water. It is this chlorine that sanitises the pool, eliminating bacteria and inhibiting algae growth. As the chlorinator controls how much chlorine is being produced, the pool pump is plugged directly into the chlorinator so the chlorinator can control the pump with an in-built timer. A standard chlorinator will not automatically measure the chlorine level of your water, so you'll still need to manually test and maintain these levels yourself by altering the chlorinator or the pump running time. You will also need to test the amount of salt in the pool water, and periodically add salt, according to the level required by the brand/model of the chlorinator. The chlorinator is not capable of consuming salt, which means that salt is only ever going to leave the pool when pool water is ejected, whether that's due to splashing or just backwash. You will also need to measure other elements of the balance of the water and make the necessary adjustments. With that in mind, there are saltwater chlorinators available that are quite intelligent, and can feature full automation thanks to in-build acid dosing, pH, and chlorine probes that automatically test and control the chlorine and pH level of your pool.

Considering the hazardous nature of liquid chlorine, a saltwater pool is simpler and safer to maintain than a liquid chlorine pool. There's also a significantly reduced risk of metal plating on the walls of the pool for a saltwater pool, in comparison with ionised pools, which use dissolved metals to sanitise the water.
