 Frequently Asked Questions

What Makes My Pool Water Cloudy?

When your swimming pool is healthy, you should be able to identify small objects on the floor of the pool with ease. If particulates have built-up within your water, then your water is likely to instead become cloudy. A functioning pool filter will generally clean your pool water by capturing these particulates, leaving your water clean and clear. If your filter is not functioning properly, whether it's dirty and full, or the media is old and unable to adequately filter, it can allow these particulates to remain within your pool water. The root cause of the particulates in the water can be dirt/dust entering the pool water from the surrounding environment, or from microscopic algae that has started to grow due to improperly sanitised pool water. The clarity of your water may also be affected by unbalanced pool water, which will reduce the effectiveness of the sanitiser, or alter the chemicals present within the water from a liquid state to a solid state. Get in touch with our excellent team at Active Pool Supplies for all pool cleaning in Hope Island on (07) 5537 3341.

Can I Prevent Algae From Growing In My Pool?

You need the right levels of sanitiser in your pool to keep the water healthy and balanced. Chlorine is the most common tool for keeping your pool well maintained, as it can help you kill any small organisms, bacteria, or algae present within your pool water. Chlorinating your pool can be done in a number of different ways. Previously, chlorine was manually added by pool owners, requiring constant maintenance. These days, however, the most common and easiest method of sanitising Hope Island pools is by installing a saltwater chlorinator in the filtration system. These systems create a soluble hypochlorous gas using electrolysis and salts, thus killing algae and bacteria and sanitising the pool water. Any chlorine treatment will depend on the pool water being appropriately balanced at an ideal pH level. ou'll also need to ensure the water is being well filtered, ensuring that the dead algae and bacteria that become captured in the filter are routinely removed from the pool. Good water flow throughout the pool is helpful, as is periodic brushing/cleaning of the walls and floor of the pool to remove dirt, dust and other debris.

Can I Make Large Changes To The Chemical Balance Of My Pool At Once?

For pool owners, there is a constant challenge of pool upkeep and maintenance to ensure the pool remains as functional as possible. Keeping the chemical balance of your pool well-maintained is a delicate process, and you should make sure you don't try to rush through it. Active Pool Supplies are the experts in all matters related to pools, and can help you make sure you're maintaining the chemical balance in your pool in the best ways possible. To speak to our team about pool care in Hope Island, call us on (07) 5537 3341.

Generally, you should avoid trying to make large changes to your pool's chemical balance all at once. You can instead use small amounts of chemicals to make small changes to your pools chemical balance. After these changes have been made, test the water once you've left it to rest for a few hours with the filter running. Unlike making large changes, you'll be able to repeat this process continuously until you're entirely satisfied with the resultant chemical balance. By adding large amounts of chemicals to your pool at once, it's possible that you'll make significant changes that will be difficult to correct. Don't make large changes to the chemical balance of your pool in a single pass if you're trying to keep it well-maintained.

Do Saltwater Pools Require Less Maintenance?

It's really rather simple to maintain a saltwater pool. If you own a saltwater pool, it'll use a saltwater chlorinator to operate the pump and sanitise the pool. By mixing sodium chloride (salt) into the pool water, the chlorinator's salt cell creates a hypochlorous gas via electrolysis, ensuring the pool is continually supplied with chlorinated water. Your pool is sanitised by this chlorine, which is known to stop algae from growing and works to eliminate bacteria in the water of your pool. The chlorinator allows you to control the amount of chlorine being produced, and typically the pool pump is plugged into the chlorinator so that the in-built timer in the chlorinator can control the operation of the pump, that is, it tells the pump when to turn on and off. You'll still need to make manual adjustments to the chlorinator and the pump based on manual tests of the chlorine level in your pool, as the chlorinator cannot automatically maintain this at the correct levels. There is also a need to test for salt in your pool water, and ensure it is maintained at the appropriate level for your chlorinator. The chlorinator is not capable of consuming salt, which means that salt is only ever going to leave the pool when pool water is ejected, whether that's due to splashing or just backwash. Similarly, you do still need to test the other elements of water balance and adjust accordingly. With that in mind, there are saltwater chlorinators available that are quite intelligent, and can feature full automation thanks to in-build acid dosing, pH, and chlorine probes that automatically test and control the chlorine and pH level of your pool.

Saltwater pools are much easier to maintain than liquid chlorine pools (and liquid chlorine is also a hazardous material), as there is no requirement to be constantly adding this dangeous chemical. For a saltwater pool, the risk of metal plating along the walls of the pool is severely reduced, making it easier to maintain than an ionised pool.
